It is a common statement among the Yoruba people to say the statement (Iwaju ni opa ebiti nre si) i.e the ebiti staff always falls headlong. This is said most especially when they are praying for someone. Most of the people who say this do not actually know what ebiti means. Ebiti is a stone snare but the stone can also be replaced with a wooden plank or a basket. See picture above.
Ebiti is made up of somw sticks and a stone. The vertical stick is the one called opa ebiti in Yoruba while the whole trap is called ebiti. A rope is tied to the bottom end of the stick and a bait is put under the stone. When the animal that is being trapped comes unde the trap to eat the bait, the person who set the trap then pulls the rope from where he is hiding and the stick falls headlong thereby making the stone collapsd on the animal. Hence the statement 'Iwaju ni opa ebiti nre si' which means that the ebiti stick always fall forward therefore the person being prayed for will go forward.
